Great price
I use this in my 2007 Volvo VNL. Can’t beat the one time charge versus monthly charges with other ELDs. App is not the best but works and is easy to use

Connection fails a bit
It is not consistent in the rest hours it has connection failures, when you put it at rest you sleep you wait 10 hours and then you realize that it is still in driving mode so it is very to have

No monthy payment
With this item, you don’t have to pay monthly fees. My only issue is, the app seems to disconnect a lot if your running other apps.

Works Great
I have been using this for a couple weeks. I have it linked to my phone. Gonna try it linked to my gps when I go back out on road. So far so good, it works great and have had no issues. You have to buy a USB drive flash card so that weekly you can back up your logs. There is no ifta feature when using thru phone. Hoping once hooked to gps that will change. I have had no issues to speak of. You have to log out at end of each shift which allows you to certify that days logs. Like I said, so far so good. Hope this helps.

check for proper installation
this ELD will not work on trucks with 9 pin connection. year model 2016 or newer you must use the Y connection offered by the dealer it would not work on my Kenworth T680 with the Paccar MX13 Engine it will not stay in on duty driving mode. After using the Y cable it preforms great. its a great buy

Good device, good price, software is a bit tricky
Good price. I like that it does not require monthly subscription – keeps all data on the device, there is no data transfers to the cloud, saves money on data usage fees. It requires a phone or a tablet with cellular location services. So not any tablet will do. The problem with using it on the phone is when you take phone out of the truck and the bluetooth connection with the device breaks, the software starts to scream “malfunction, malfunction”. Hard to get rid of these pesky malfunction messages. I switched to Samsung galaxy tab with data plan from ATT. The software prompts you to do regular backups, otherwise malfunction warnings start to pop up. There is no mobile support chat, I was able to access the support chat only from PC. The manual is murky, I had to chat a few times with support just to understand some points. There are a few tricks with this device and the software, that you have to figure out by yourself. Not sure if the sleep berth split, which is allowed in paper logs, will work with this software. Did not try out of fear it will reset the sleep hours.Mounting the device on my Volvo 780 was tricky. First, it requires adapter, which is hard to find. You have to make some kind of harness so it will not fall off or disconnect when driving. I made a flange and bolted it to a dash, so it’s well secured.

Too many issues, not very reliable
It will do the job for the most part, However….There’s more and more issues each week. I have it installed in Cascadia since November. It’s very easy to use and understand but when I first tried to transfer data, it failed and I tried emailing the reports but they were blank.Sometimes, as soon as you turn the engine on, it switches to driving. Keep in mind if it records driving, you cant edit it at all, even if its an error.I was also looking at the inspection reports at the end of the day, and it added extra mileage out of nowhere. I knew I drove 400 miles that day, but it recorded 650. Explain that to DOT, lol. It corrected itself the next day. Also sometimes it would add extra miles on your odometer report and the next day it would clear itself and show correct. Sometimes it would show 999999 on the odometer report, and another time it showed I drove 65000 miles in a day. Those didnt correct. Ridiculous. Also, it lags a lot, especially toward the end of the day. Most times it will take about a min to do a change of duty status. While sitting in traffic, it sometimes loses signal with the adapter and you’ll have to unplug and plug back it. But if you do that, it will record a malfunction. I have it connected to a galaxy tablet, which is new too, so i doubt its the tablet. But the most scary thing is that it messes with the trucks obd unit. For me, it sometimes turns on the hazard flasher lights by itself during the night. And I also noticed, when i manually turn my lights off, sometimes it takes about a min just for the headlights to turn off. I haven’t had any of such issues before I installed this unit. I honestly wouldn’t recommend, I thought with a name like Garmin it would be a lot better. It’s nowhere close to a good reliable product. I’ll stick with it a little longer but if they re not going to updated, I’ll have to change it. But change it with what, they all must have issues, it’s new technology that just rushed to the market, and forces us to buy their crap products.

Will not work with OBD-2 plug
The quality of this ELD seems fantastic but you can’t use it with the OBD – two plug even if you have the cable adapter that fits into the OBD on one and has the round nine pin connector on the other end. Also, another issue I did not like was when you set up the app for the Garman ELD, it first asks for a name of an administrator, and when you’re finished with that, then you must enter the name of the first driver, and if the administrator and the driver has the same name, it won’t allow you to continue so you have to use a version of the name. And the tech-support person at garment was very helpful and knowledgeable and he explained that the device sometimes will work, but mostly will not if you connect it to the OBD – to plug.

Doesn’t have FMCSA exemptions
It is a good product, steady bluetooth connectivity but I didn’t like it for following reasons:Software doesn’t have “Adverse Driving Conditions” and “Two hours Driving Extension once a Week” legal FMCSA exemptions. The other day I had to drive 2.5 hours personal conveyance because software lacks those other options.Secondly when you’re logged out and tablet is off and you drive, when you turn your tablet back on and log back in it registers that driving event automatically as drive and you van only change it to personal conveyance. The other day I logged out and turned tablet off, then drove a couple of seconds to move truck to a different spot in the yard. Then went back to sleep. In the morning when I woke up and logged in the device registered the whole night 😧 as drive and therefor a long violation. All I could do is change it to personal conveyance to remove violations.I hope my review helps you make a good decision.

The good, The bad & The ugly about Garmin ELD
This Garmin ELD is easy to setup and it is relatively cheap if you don’t calculate the hidden cost.It might be a issue with all the ELD’s out there that work via phone/tablet apps, but this ELD requires a dedicated smartphone or tablet. It will work for a owner operator but for small fleets it doesn’t unless you buy a tablet with a constant data connection or one that can work on a hotspot. You can only use multiple drivers on this ELD if you use the same smartphone of tablet. You cannot use multiple smartphones that all have their own app. Each app creates its own account so if you log out the next driver to use it will reset all the data or it won’t work anymore and the ELD and app have to be reset.Don’t buy the dezl garmin gps tablet as a solution because that also connects to the ELD via your cellphone or data tablet. After buying a few of these things I realized it’s cheaper and much more reliable and efficient to go with keep trucking ELD.I hope this helps.

If you have a DeZL GPS, this is handy and NO subscription fee
Works fine, no issues. If you are an owner/operator and just need something for your truck, this is simple, inexpensive and doesn’t require a subscription. I use it for those rare times that I leave my 150 air mile radius. Worth the little extra money to not have to deal with keeping a logbook. It does take a few uses to get familiar with it. Print out the guide to carry with you. Your supposed to have that in the truck anyway.

Good unit once you get it figured out
as a Truck driver we had to comply with the new ELD laws and so we tried these. They work good but a little difficult to understand how to set up and use… We slip seat our trucks and found this device would be hard to connect to or would disconnect us while driving. After a few tech calls we were informed that these are meant to be connected to only 1 Bluetooth tablet. being that we each use our phones to connect we were told we should get each driver a device to use versus having each truck use one. If you have a tablet in each truck using multiple drivers is easy just log in your profile then good to go. Just don’t forget to log off duty when your done.

Do not buy
This product malfunctioned on me at least three times. I kick myself, because I should have known that anything using on blue tooth is going to be unreliable. Unfortunately, that’s not an option if you want to be compliant. First I had it synced to my Garmin truckers gps. Would freeze up. One time it had the wrong time of day displayed and wouldn’t let me fix it or even exit the screen. Tried re-booting and troubleshooting and nothing worked. Mind you I am on the road at this point and NEED this to work. Ended up abandoning the Garmin gps, and syncing to my phone with the app. Worked ok for about two hours then wouldn’t let me change my duty status. Customer service non existent. Had to go to paper log ad a back up for my whole week out. DOT does not like to hear that your required ELD is not working. Not a good way to start off a road side inspection. I bought this because the one time expense lured me in. Just ordered the Verizon ELD that’s hard wired to battery and is stand alone. I’ll have to suck it up and deal with the monthly subscription.

NOT compatible with the DEZL 770
Hooked it up and paired it, DEZL 770 GPS tells me that this is NOT compatible. This is in conflict with the description given by the seller. False advertising!DEZL is fully up-to-date on software, so I can only guess this is a marketing ploy..

It makes me feel dumb
Ive been doing eld since it started and this thing is confusing at best. I don’t know how to do a pre or post trip. It’s ugly compared to keep truckin and confusing to look at. It won’t let you manually change duty status when you come to a stop. It asks me when I shut the truck off if I want to stay in driving mode…wtf; No! Currently looking for a non subscription based eld compared to keep truckin; This is the second chance I gave it and now I know why I left the first time.

Works for me
So like most of us new to the mandate, I had to choose something to install on my truck. I’ve used this ELD for a week together with the dezl 770 navigation unit. They work well together and I’ve opted for that route since I didn’t want to have rely on my phone for logs. Yes this unit does beep when you start up and also beeps to indicate that you started to drive. I’ve noticed that it will beep in stop and go traffic. If you listen to music while driving you won’t notice it anymore. The beep is the only downfall in my opinion but at the same time I know it has power. The unit does light up Blue but mine is tucked away behind the fuse box door.

30 min rule needs updating
Garmin needs to update the 30 min rule. They are still going by the old rule. You need to take a 30 min break after 8 hrs of cumulative driving Only other than that the unit works good but the software on phone and GPS tablets needs updating to reflect the new 30 min rule

Easy to install, however the duty status will change in its own, example, while driving it will switch to on duty status then you have to reset it back to driving. If you are in a line of traffic it automatically goes to off duty.

Don’t purchase this without reading their website!
This product does not work with Hino Box Trucks. It is hard to manage and give lots of fault information. Super difficult for drivers to operate. Most drivers are not well educated, and for these, you have to be an app expert to use! Their customer service doesn’t know how to fix the problems. They say they will contact you but will never do and when you call they put you on two hours of hold until you are exhausted and give up!

It’s was working fine until I got this diagnostic malfunction. If I can’t transfer files for an inspection that’s an issue for me. It’s great for a driver who doesn’t leave there state. But this malfunction needs to be fixed. I’ve tried troubleshooting with no success, I will have to return it.

No monthly service
It took couple of days to get used to. One thing I don’t like is: my plug is too close to my clutch; I hit it couple of times. It came with a 6 pin to 9 pin converter, I wish it came with 9 pin Y split instead. I miss my paper log… Among many other things the passed good life had offered. 🙂

Best ELD for Independent Contactors
Best ELD for truck drivers that have their own rig. It’s inexpensive for it’s accuracy. Only advice is to download the garmin app on a second device like a tablet or second cellphone with a data connection. The gps will drain your battery and use lots of data. Get an unlimited plan. Similar ELD require a monthly or annual subscription. This one does not hand is FMCA compliant.

Not worth
I had a dezl 700 that I wanted to pair with this. I bought it. The miles wouldn’t update on my eld. It does say that it might be because the dash might communicate differently with the ecm but that was never a problem with my old eld.______________It connects quickly and would be useful if it would just log the mileage. Sadly it didn’t. And it doesn’t work well with ag exempt, it beeps non stop jf you log out and it logs the driving as on duty. So it’s really only meant for otr drivers.

Complicated, doesn’t work properly.
Sometimes it doesn’t record properly, the millage is different then the odometer change. If you have two or more people who are trying to connect on their own devices it is a complete nightmare to sync to a different phone. Even when the first person goes off-duty and shuts Bluetooth off. Then if you run the Garmin dezl gps and try to get it to show your hos and time remaining it 8 out of 10 times says Bluetooth not connected. When you just wasted the last hour resetting Bluetooth 10 times to even connect the eld to the phone app so you know it’s working. All I’m saying is if you get this hopefully you have good luck, either with this eld or with the inspection because I’m not 100% sure it’s accurate.

I couldn’t connect for over 4 hours and once I connected which I stop driving 2 hours prior. I couldn’t change my driving status because if you forget to take yourself off driving there’s no way to reverse or edit this even though your truck hasn’t moved. I forgot cause I didn’t get the notification like usual because I wasn’t connected. I’m returning this And the Garmin 700 cause according to that gps I 85 through Atlanta is a no truck route..which is false. Smh

This garbage doesn’t let you to correct ANYTHING. When I was doing PTI it did not let me to mark it and placed messages about “wrong time”. When I accidentally marked my several days as “personal”, this stupid Garmin garbage didn’t let me to change it for “off duty” how it was originally. Now, after 3+hours of driving this stupid Garmin GARBAGE shows I’m in violation of my time. Perhaps REYARDS work for IT department of Garmin. DO NOT BUY THIS GARBAGE.

Just AWFUL
I have it for 3 and 1/2 years.I used it with my Garmin DEZL Gps, and it sucked.Went to using it with my iPad, and the app crushed all the time.I’m using it with my iPhone now, and it bit better, but 2 day ago State trooper in Ohio pulled me over and wanted me to submit inspection report via the WEB Services option. I couldn’t figure it out how it works. I googled it and found nothing useful. Called Garmin, and the costumer Service is ZERO, non existent.I got a violation on the inspection report, and I’, moving on to something better.Would not recommend it because a cop can give you a violation if he want’s too

Partially Functional, mostly a hassle
If you leave it in one truck and only one person ever drives it, while connected to the device with the app and logged into the app, then it works ok. BUT; the owners manual specifically says that the unit CAN be moved to another vehicle, but that is not the case. Moved it from one truck to another and it will not accept any input from the driver. I called Garmin support, and they have no answers as to why it won’t work.
