Miracle worker! Can use without the timer feature!
My mom has had bad insomnia for several years, more noticeably in the past year as she recovered from knee surgery that left her in a lot of pain even after her knee had “healed”. She tried everything for sleep: melatonin, Ambien, a 1/2 glass of wine, herbal remedies, diets, low/no sugar, the list goes on and on. She already was eating healthy and exercising as much as could be expected, but she could not sleep. I got her DVDs and CDs from the library and she hated them all. Then I thought of this on 1/13/13, and now she sleeps!!!!!!She doesn’t have that blissful perfect sleep that she wants, but now she dozes off and wakes up more rested – without medication for sleep! We’ve had this for 5 days and the change is definitely noticeable! The sounds are as listed: ocean, summer night, rain, thunder, white noise and brook.”Ocean” is perfect, the dogs think the beach is in the bedroom and you think a surfer will walk in at any moment!”Summer Night” has cricket noises and sounds like riding Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland (without the music)”Rain” is by far the most relaxing. The “Thunder” one is odd as you would think thunder is a scary noise for some, but hey if it works for you use it!”White Noise” sounds just like a fan, a kind of noisy fan, but a fan.”Brook” sounds bubbly and is my least favorite… it sounds like a brook but also like a faucet running. My mom listens to this very loud for some reason – I can hear it 2 rooms away – but she can sleep with it like that. I come in and turn it down when I go by her room and she doesn’t wake up. The sound is unobtrusive even when it is loud, and when I do hear it I am usually reading or something and it is pretty comforting. The audio does not sound tinny at all and is very realistic. I was surprised at the sound quality especially when she had it turned up so loud, but it was very good.I bought this model because it specifically did not have the heartbeat sound – maybe good for kids who have not read Edgar Allan Poe, but not for us!Note: This one can play ALL NIGHT LONG!! I was afraid the timer feature was the only way to use it as with some other brands/models, but you just turn this on and let it run as long as you want. Thanks to the other reviewer who mentioned that feature. The unit is very lightweight and I can see how it can be very portable for trips. Not sure how long the batteries would last, so will probably use it with the adapter whenever we can. It is so lightweight, I do think that if you dropped it, it would probably break or crack, so be careful with it.Definitely worth the money!

Awesome and inexpensive!
I have had this sound machine since 2020. I have taken it around the world with me in hotels and AirBNBs. It is great! I enjoy all of the sounds and it’s just the right volume. It is light and small so great for travel and beside your bed. I am about to purchase a second one because my daughter loves it, too!

Well worth it. It does help you get to sleep.
I had used one of these while in a PTSD inpatient therapy program. I would NOT of been able to sleep with out using one due to all of the issues being brought up in group by the end of the day my mind was still going.. So I purchased one of these to use at home. This sound machine really is a God send. It’s sturdy the sounds are not cheap. It’s clear sounding. Well worth it. I use the white noise selection.

Lots of sound options
Bought to mask snoring. Works well. Has a lot of options and volume control is very helpful. You have to find the right sound for you. Some of them seemed a little irritating instead of restful, but to each his own. That is why the options are so important. I also like the volume control and start out quietly and adjust the volume to where i need it. The buttons are easy to use, even in the dark. The only downside is that the audio is not high quality and can have a tinny sound at times. Again, some of the sound options might be better than others, so the variety is helpful, as well as the volume control in finding something that is tolerable. Overall, it was a good investment for me and helped me sleep through light snoring. When the snoring gets loud I still have to use ear plugs because with the low sound quality you don’t want to turn this thing up too loud. I don’t use the timer function as having the noise suddenly stop would wake me up.

Excellent, portable, versatile sound machine
This is my 3rd Homedics SoundSleep Noise Machine purchase. They work off of either battery power or plug-in and have a variety of sounds to choose from – ocean, nature, white noise, etc. The volume is easily adjustable and the size fits well on a nightstand. Highly reccomend!

So this is what a good nights sleep feels like??
LOVE this!! My husband and I usually sleep with 2-3 fans on because we need white noise to be able to get any sleep. But now that it’s winter, the fans are drying out our sinuses and we wake every morning with a headache. Not today though! I slept so good last night with just the sound machine on and feel great this morning!

Use for short periods, not overnight in child’s room
When it works, it’s great. The volume is easy to control, the sounds it comes with are pleasant enough, and the semi-flat design makes it easily portable. However, the battery life is not great and the cord makes the device glitchy after a while. We bought one for each of our children’s rooms, within a few months of each other. The plan was to use them at night and during nap times. This worked for a while, but after a few months, each of them started going off more often, whether they were using battery or the cord. Even after putting new batteries in, it’s like the device itself had worn out because the new batteries sometimes would only last a few minutes. And if you fold the cord too often to take it on trips with you, the cord will make the machine itself glitchy, turning on and off. We really wanted these to work well for a long time instead of paying for some of the more expensive sound machines out there, but you get what you pay for. Would recommend this for someone who uses it occasionally for some ambient noise, takes a nap here and there, or wants a portable sound machine, but not for long-term use in a child’s room.

Good basic sound machine at good orice
We’ve had this same model sound machine in the past so we knew what we were getting. We’ve had a variety of styles of sound machines over the years. Despite all of the options on the sound machines, we only use the white noise or fan sounds on them. One exception would be the heartbeat sound that was on our previous version of this model, which my grandson liked. The current version that we recently purchased doesn’t have a heartbeat sound, though.I like my white noise/fan sounds to be higher pitched. I don’t care for the deep-toned industrial fan sound or low-pitched white noise sound that some sound machines have. This machine’s white noise is about mid-range. It does sounds a little bit like a recording of a sound rather than just the sound itself, if that makes sense. It’s usually loud enough for our needs, but it’s not the loudest machine I’ve ever seen. It may not be loud enough to cover the sound of a loud snorer in the same room, for example. However, it is functional and it was the best I could find on Amazon to meet my preferences. I have a favorite model buy a different brand that makes just the right sound I like but it is no longer being manufactured.

Cute little sound machine
I am reliant on white noise in order to sleep. My previous unit started making funky noises so I knew it was time to replace it. I saw this unit and read all the positive reviews plus the fact that this unit could be battery operated was worthy of at least giving it a try. This unit doesn’t have a separate power and volume control. It’s all packed together in a dial. With current technology I was surprised to see this and disappointed that I hadn’t noticed this prior to purchasing. This causes the user to have determine what volume to use every night, you can’t jut set it and forget. It also has a rather bright green status light. Would have thought a company making items for use at night in your sleeping area would eliminate this as it’s not a feature and isn’t necessary. I covered the light with a piece of electrical tape and was able to eliminate that defect. There isn’t anything I can about the on/off/volume dial. I would return it if it wasn’t for the fact that this is the only sound machine I’ve ever seen with the ability to operate using batteries. We loose power kinda often so this is a huge feature for me being as reliant as I am on white noise. Two stars boosted to four solely due to the battery operated option. If it had an on/off button, separate volume control, and no status light this could have been perfect.

Simple to use
Perfect sound machine for grandparents house!! I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a high tech sound machine for my toddler when she stays with grandma and grandpa. This one has been absolutely perfect. The sound is super easy to adjust and there’s even a few different audios to choose from. Grandma had no trouble using it. She’s actually enjoyed using it so much that she started turning it on her for puppies and they’re now sleeping through the night! Definitely can’t promise that it will help your baby/puppy sleep through the night, but do rest assured that it’s very simple to use!!!

Great that it’s portable
My husband is sleeping with the fan in the winter, mainly for the noise, and I couldn’t stand it any longer. I was tired of freezing when going to bed. I ordered this as a substitute. He likes the thunderstorm sounds on this. I like the white noise. It sounds like a waterfall. I could not listen to the ocean; it sounds like one wave over and over with no change up. The night time sound with crickets is neat but not something I could go to sleep too. The running brook makes me think about going to pee. lol The cool thing about this is we can take it when we travel. I don’t think the sound is all that great, but for the options it has on it, it definitely still warrants five stars. I would order it again.

Nice small sound machine
Pretty cool little machine. I used the cricket sounds last night and woke up thinking there were really crickets outside my window🤣😂😁🤪🙃 Quality of all the sounds aren’t that great so I only gave it 4 stars but for the price all is good! I also like that it comes with a power cord so I can choose between plugging in or batteries. Don’t think I will ever use the timer but the good part is it can also run constantly.

Absolutely smashed our expectations. The best wired noise machine on the market.
My son absolutely has to have noise to sleep at night and he is VERY particular about what that means. We’ve been through several battery operated machines and multiple smart speakers with mixed results. I bought this because we needed a wired option and this one was ready out of the box.He loves it! Very little fuss when it’s time for bed. He just turns the knob and it starts right up. It does have a sleep timer, but it also runs continuously if you so desire.

Tried and true!!
I’ve been using one of these for probably 10-12 years. I’ve only had to replace it once. I’ve gotten them for gifts for other people who also love them. You can plug it in or you can use batteries therefore taking it with you camping or maybe other places where power may not be available. I absolutely love mine. It’s so soothing. I would recommend this item to anyone. I just purchased this one for a friend for Christmas (he was having trouble sleeping) and he loves it.

Fragile Adapter
Great for sleep, this machine works exactly as advertised. The only flaw is the extremely fragile adapter cable. It is so thin it breaks easily. So be prepared to spend a little extra to get another 6V adapter or to run it solely on the battery backup. Otherwise, it would have been a five star item.

Better Sleep Made Easy
The Homedics SoundSleep White Noise Sound Machine has been a game-changer for my family, especially my parents. They struggled with the complexity of our smart home gadgets and longed for the soothing benefits of white noise. The Homedics machine made things simple with easy-to-use buttons, allowing them to effortlessly enjoy nature sounds without tech-related stress. The sound quality is fantastic, offering clear and relaxing options like rain, ocean, and more. The best part is that it actually helps them sleep better, improving their energy levels and mood. The auto-off timer is a bonus for energy efficiency. I highly recommend the Homedics SoundSleep for anyone seeking a straightforward solution to enhance sleep, especially for tech-wary parents. It’s a worthwhile investment in well-being that pays off, and you might even find yourself sneaking in for a nap too!

Good Price, Glitching Sound
We’ve been using this sound machine almost nonstop since it arrives because we have a newborn — need I say more?!I really want to give this machine five stars, but after only three weeks, it is experiencing “glitches” where it stops playing the sound for a split second or even up to 10 seconds. That sounds like no big deal until you realize that even a nanosecond halting will turn a calm, sleeping infant into the incredible hulk. If the t-rex’s vision is based on movement, a newborn’s sleep pattern is based on seamless sound (plus a little bit of pixie dust, but it was missing from my stuff mart pick-up order). It’s a precarious state of equilibrium that is about as elusive as a cure for cancer, so when you finally have a moment of peace but a glitching sound machine causes them to stir or fully awake — there can be no five star review. The pros: low profile, several sound options including rain (our little t-rex’s favorite sound other than her own vocal cords at max volume), ability to run on batteries or plugged into the wall, low cost point. The con: WHY IS IT GLITCHING?! It has happened twice in the time it took to begin this review. Surely the makers haven’t programmed it to take sadistic pleasure in toying with a sleep-deprived parent’s hope for an uninterrupted hour to “sleep when the baby sleeps”?! Nay, I cannot believe in such a conspiracy; so perhaps my unit is a lemon?I may give it a good ol’ slap on the hood to see if it ceases from its electrical seizures, or I’ll put it in a box, put that box in another box, mail it to myself, and when it arrives, I’ll smash it with a hammer. Then again, if it has night vision, it has seen my ferocious glares and mayhap that has scared it back into functioning properly. I’ll report back if it has rehabilitated itself, but if this review remains unedited, well, that should be answer enough. So, buy it if the price is worth three weeks of flawless use. Or maybe try a different one. We have a more bougie machine for my 2yo, a gift from a friend, and perhaps I shouldn’t have been a scrooge and just paid for a more expensive machine and learned the true meaning of Christmas and enjoyed a silent night.

Get this one. This machine saved LIVES.
I have always had a lot of trouble sleeping. Honestly, that’s understating things. My poor mother, the things she went through trying to get me to sleep as a child… someone should see about having her sainted. Anyway, fast forward many years, and I’m living with my beloved but noisy-sleeping husband in our new house with our impossibly loud dog…OUTSIDE. Between my husband who, I will state again, I love very much, and the dog barking at bogeymen in the night, I wasn’t sleeping a wink, even with earplugs and a fan running for–you guessed it–white noise. I could still hear my husband’s pesky breathing, clicking and occasional snoring and the dog incessantly scream-barking at god only knows what…I heard EVERYTHING. Muffled, yes, but I could hear it all, and for someone with as much difficulty sleeping as me, that won’t fly. For volume, to help drown out the sounds, I tried SOOOOO many white noise machines, but even through my earplugs, as I lay waiting for the sweet release of either sleep or death (at that point I didn’t really care which) I could hear the cut & loop of the sounds on every machine I tried. It became as bad as my husband’s inexplicable clicking night-breathing sound (he doesn’t do it during the day), no matter how hard I tried to ignore it I would find myself waiting for the cut and restart of the sound loop, my whole body would tense as it approached and it drove me further up the wall than I already was. So a dear friend of mine who worked at a high-end inn nearby gave me a white noise machine, they were buying a whole new set for the inn and several of the old ones still worked great, and she said she’d never heard a nicer white noise machine. I didn’t have a lot of hope, but I was willing to try anything. It was miraculous. Clean, pleasant white-noise selections with no discernable cut/loop, and I could turn it up as loud as I needed, or down, but what use is down in this scenario? I slept. I can’t tell you how important that is, I freaking SLEPT, you guys! I was able to both fall asleep and stay asleep through the cacophony of sounds made by everyone/thing around me. After many nights of success, the fear set in; I needed to know that if something happened to my miracle remedy, I could replace it. I looked at the information on the machine and googled it and found homedics, my savior. I bought a replacement before I needed it because I’m paranoid (side-effect of lack of sleep, anyone?) and when it arrived I turned it on just to make sure it was the same… hallelujah! It was. This machine saved my life…well, either mine or my husband’s. Both I guess, because if I murdered him I’d be sent to prison and I know I couldn’t sleep in there and I would die the slow, agonizing death of long term sleep deprivation. But we found this machine, and that didn’t happen, so HOORAY! If you need to sleep and white noise is your only hope, then this is your Obi-Wan Kenobi. Buy it!

Some things to know
Ok. First thing first. This unit as far as sound quality goes is exactly on par with its price. This is not a high-end quality speaker/sound system, so the reviews about it sounding “tinny” or high in treble, well that’s just a bit “i want my cake and eat it too”.The people who claim to hear strange sounds or voices, I have no doubt are. There are a couple of logical explanations. Plugging it into an outlet or even another outlet that runs on the same line (breaker) with one that has a TV or some type of media or appliance etc, may cause interference (humming, voice sounds, spooky stuff, grinding, etc). The other is white noise machines, as well as other items that produce constant noise ( ie bedroom fans), are known to cause auditory hallucinations in some people. Your brain is constantly trying to find patterns in things that have no pattern, like seeing animals in clouds, and sleep machine voices are another example of that. I have the latter issue to some extent, no voices. White noise is the only setting I can use for sleep. It seems to have the least amount of loop sound. The other sounds are ok for about 5 minutes and completely acceptable to use if you are listening just as background sound and doing something else. But if that is all you are listening to and trying to fall asleep you may find your brain focused on searching for a pattern. Once it discovers it, because the loop is about every 4-5 seconds it will become fixated on it. Rain for example has a constant soothing drizzle in the background – no problem, but throughout it, there are faint dripping sounds at different sound levels, the way 4 or 5 different leaky shower or faucet drips would sound one after another (BLOOP, bip, bit, BLAP, bit), then it repeats and repeats and repeats. Summer Night has crickets at different sound levels, I found the pattern after about 20 seconds. Some people may notice this others may not. I really doubt a baby or child would but those who have a tendency to be sensitive to something like that may be better off just buying a pure white machine. And even that may not help auditory hallucinations.Would I buy it again? For the price probably. The white noise for me is fine for sleeping and if I’m doing stuff around the house or working in the garage and don’t feel like a radio or tv I turn it on. I have batteries in it so it’s portable and for the bedroom, I plug it in.Hope this helps.

Different sound quality
My daughter has this at her dad’s house, and I had a different brand for my house. She said she liked this kind more, so they sent it home with me to use until I could get my own. When mine came, the “rain” sound she likes to use was noticeably different between their version and my version, even though it’s the exact same machine. I already threw the box away because I figured it would be the same across the board, and now I have to buy another one and hope that the “rain” sound quality will be the same that she’s used to when she’s trying to sleep. It is nice that you have the option to not turn a timer on and let it run all night, and it does get decently loud to drown out external sounds around the house. Really bummed about the sound quality, I hope this one was just a glitch and the next one I get will be good. And lesson learned, don’t throw the box away until you get the seal of approval from the person who is using it!
